KAIST and the Sun Medical Center agreed to cooperate to expand medical services making use of electronic communication technology in an agreement signed at the Main Conference Room of KAIST on June 9. The signing ceremony was attended by dozens of dignitaries including Kang Sung-mo, president of KAIST, and Sun Seung-hoon, chairman of the Sun Medical Center.

Under the agreement, the two organizations agreed to cooperate in ▲ R&D of mobile healthcare services, ▲ R&D of a system to contribute to the development of the health care industry, ▲ the development of an interactive telemedicine system for foreign patients, and ▲jointly carrying out national projects.

Specifically, KAIST and the Daejeon-based hospital will proceed with the development of Internet-based wearable devices and sensing equipment, build a system to promote health and provide health services, utilizing these developments, and jointly move into a global healthcare market.

KAIST President Kang said, "If the medical technologies of the Sun Medical Center, with a history of a half a century, will be combined with the information technologies of KAIST, which is ranked in the world's top 20 in the field of information technology, a new growth engine will be created in the field of mobile healthcare."

Sun Medical Center Chairman Sun Seung-hoon was also upbeat over the agreement. "It is of great significance that two prominent organizations, KAIST and Sun Medical Center, have agreed to join forces, setting their eyes on a global market. If KAIST faculty members will work together with the hospital's medical team led by Dr. Yun Bang-boo, a nationally-renowned physician, substantial results worthy of international attention will come out," he stated.

Meanwhile, KAIST College of Information Science and Technology is working on the development of a mobile healthcare system aimed at providing individual biometric information. This work is expected to contribute to the enhancement of medical services and accumulation of medical records. To this end, a team consisting of 28 full-time faculty members was launched in early March to undertake the so-called "Dr. M Project."
