KAIST Finds Terahertz Radiation Causes Side Effects in Living Body
- First Examines Effects on Inflammatory Cells After Being Exposed to THz Radiation-

A new study from KAIST has found that terahertz radiation, which has been called the "electromagnetic wave of the future" for its wide potential applications, has side effects, contrary to the prevalent conception that it is harmless to humans.
 
A joint research team led by Prof. Kim Pil-han of the Graduate School of Nanoscience and Technology and Dr. Jeong Yeong-wuk from the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) announced on June 18 that they had discovered symptoms of infection on skin tissue of a test animal exposed to terahertz radiation.
 
The results were published in the May 19 online edition of "Optics Express," an international academic journal in the field of optics.

 

As electromagnetic radiation within the band of frequencies from 0.1THz~10THz (1THz = 1012 Hz). terahertz radiation travels in a line of sight. But with wavelength longer than that of infrared rays, it can penetrate many common materials in the manner of X-rays. As its energy level is low, it is generally considered biologically innocuous.

 

These properties allows applications in many different fields including security scanners, the next generation of wireless mobile communications and medical imaging. Nevertheless, the effects of terahertz radiation on human health have not been extensively examined. 

 

Furthermore, existing studies on the effects of THz electromagnetic radiation on human health have been conducted only on artificially cultured cells, and thus it is impossible to predict the effects on the living tissues of complex and diverse structures.

 

Researchers at KAERI first developed a high-power terahertz wave generator that can be applied on animal bodies. It was imperative to increase the power output significantly since a high-power generator with output power 10 times that of generators used in the communication area was needed for applications such as biosensors.  

 

Meanwhile, KAIST researchers created a high-resolution 3D  laser scanning microscope capable of identifying cells in living tissues.

 

The joint research team exposed a genetically-engineered mouse to high-power terahertz radiation for 30 minutes and discovered after six hours that the number of inflammatory cells in the skin tissue increased more than six-fold.

 

This was the first time to find side effects of terahertz radiation exposure, which was widely anticipated to have the potential to effectively treat skin diseases such as squamous cell carcinoma without damaging the human body.

 

"The research is designed to propose standards for safe use of terahertz radiation, which currently is being used in various fields," said Prof. Kim Pil-han. "It will be used in accurately understanding and analyzing the effects on living body of various kinds of electromagnetic waves used in everyday life." 

 

The research was conducted with funding from the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning for the National Research Foundation's  World-Class Institute (WCI) and Engineering Research Center (ERC) Project.
