KAIST succeeds in commercialization of 3D holographic microscopy technology
“New paradigm for cell observation under the microscope”

YongKeun Park, a professor in the Department of Physics at KAIST, has succeeded in the commercialization of three-dimensional holographic microscopy technology.

Last September, Professor Park co-founded TomoCube, Inc., with CEO Kihyun Hong, who has years of experience in industrial optical inspection and measurement.


With existing optical microscopy technology, it was previously difficult to observe live cells because samples had to be dyed with fluorescent substances in order to obtain 3D dynamics. 3D viewing was impossible for immunocytes and stem cells, which had to be re-injected into the body.


The research team employed digital holographic technology to integrate the principle of computed tomography (CT), and successfully launched a 3D holographic microscope that enables real-time 3D imaging of cells and tissues without staining.

In just six months since its establishment, TomoCube has attracted a joint investment of 3 million won from SoftBank Ventures Korea and Hanmi Science.


TomoCube’s new microscope is already being used in two Korean hospitals, Seoul National University Hospital in Bundang and Boraemae Hospital in Seoul. It also received the spotlight at the Photonics West Exhibition 2016, held in San Francisco last February.


Professor Park said, “Our technology has created a new paradigm for cell observation under the microscope. It is expected to have various applications in pharmaceuticals, neuroscience, immunology, hematology, and cell biology.”
