Evaluated Thesis for Degree Conferment
  • The thesis may be written in Korean or English, with no limitation to quantity.
  • Use white, A4 paper
  • For Korean and English abstracts, a maximum of 500 letters and 300 words, respectively, are allowed
  • The following must be submitted within the timeframe listed below to the Thesis Evaluation Committee. 6 copies for the Ph.D. program, along with the approval of submission of the evaluated thesis for degree conferment, and 6 copies of the evaluated thesis for degree conferment must be submitted for the graduate curriculum.
  • When evaluating the doctoral thesis schedule, if the thesis title and the title of the evaluated thesis for degree conferment are different, the changes must be recorded on the Request for Doctoral Evaluated Thesis Form and submitted to the associated department/major.

Thesis for Submission (Printing)
  • The front cover of the thesis (refer to appendix 1 P.9) should be printed in Korean and English. The authors name should be printed in Korean, followed by the English spelling in parentheses (international students should write their name in English and their native language).
  • The title of the thesis should be printed in Korean on a page inserted after the front cover.
  • The thesis should be printed on A4 (210×790mm) paper, the type of paper should be imitation paper, and the upper margin should be 30mm, while the lower, left, and right margins should each be 25.4mm.
  • There is no limit to the word count. Font should be in Myungjo, Shin Myungjo, Batangchae, or Gulimchae for theses printed in Korean and Arial, Times New Roman, or an equivalent font for theses printed in English. (Truetype font should be used, and the characters should be able to be searched. Scanned characters cannot be searched and therefore cannot be used).
  • Page numbers should be located in the center of the bottom of the page – before the main body page numbers should be in lower case Roman alphabet and in Arabic numerals for the main body of the thesis.
  • After printing the thesis. It should be bound with the seal of completion from the head of the Evaluation Committee.
    *Hardbound copies must have the original seal or signature. Softbound copies do not require original seals/signatures.
  • Refer to the “Thesis Writing Example & Sample” to meet the standard requirements for the writing method of other covers and the main body (the main body may be adjusted depending on department or thesis characteristics).
    Blank space, spacing, and font may be adjusted to improve legibility.
Thesis Submission Procedures

When the thesis is approved by the Thesis Evaluation Committee
①Send the electronic thesis file (following the steps to creating a computer file of the electronic thesis) to the library homepage (http://library.kaist.ac.kr)
② Print the Electronic Thesis Release Form (can be printed from the electronic thesis submission system)
③ Check and receive confirmation from the department office if the thesis title on the Thesis management of graduate management system and the printed thesis are the same (if different, correct error and receive confirmation from the person in charge)
④ Of the downloadable files below, follow no. 1 “Drafting and Submission Procedures,” submit 6 copies within the given period
⑤ submit to the department office.

Computerized thesis submission site: access the library homepage (http://library.kaist.ac.kr) and select “Library Service” from the menu > then click “Thesis Submission.”

Placing a hold on degree conferment
  • A hold will be placed on the conferment of a degree if the printed these is not submitted on time or if there are circumstances keeping the student from graduating, whether or not thesis passed the thesis evaluation.
  • In this case, for the next semesters evaluation, the thesis must be reevaluated (applies to those evaluated after the 2003 spring semester).
Matters Related to the Release of the Thesis for the Conferment of a Degree

1) The printed thesis is to be released according to principle, but if there are special reasons for it to remain private, the advising professor’s private consent form, including the reason and term, must be attached (p. 29 of the Drafting and Submission Procedures).
2) The release of the electronic thsis may be made public or private, but if private, the reason and term must be recorded in detail.

Referance Notes

The title of the thesis management of graduate management system must be parallel (if the title’s aren’t parallel, the title will be different on the certificate of graduation).
