Graduation Requirements

Credit and Grade Requirements

Credits
  • Undergraduate: 136 credits (applicable to students entering KAIST in 2016 and thereafter)
  • Graduate: at least 33 credits (at least 21 coursework credits and at least 12 research credits)
  • Ph.D.: at least 60 credits (at least 30 coursework credits and at least 30 research credits)
Grades
  • Undergraduate: cumulative GPA of at least 2.0/4.3
  • Graduate: cumulative GPA of at least 2.5/4.3

Community Service (4AU) Requirements for Graduation

Through the experience of community service, character education (often lacked in schools specializing in natural sciences and engineering) is strengthened, providing students the opportunity to develop creative leadership.

Targets of Application
  • Students enrolled beginning in 1998: 4AU (community service)
  • Students enrolled beginning in 2007: 2AU (community service)
  • Students enrolled beginning in 2011: no requirement of community service
Application Period
  • Performance records from the first half of the year (January ~ June) should be applied for by the end of June.
  • Performance records from the second half of the year (July ~ December) should be applied for by the end of December.
Community Service Organizations
Off-campus
  • Social welfare organizations such as Flower Village, orphanages, nursing homes, and welfare centers.
  • Public institutions such as museums, libraries, Red Cross Blood Centers, and the Korea National Park Services; government offices such as city hall, and district offices.
  • Environmental organizations such as hospitals, medical welfare centers, and volunteer centers.
On-campus
  • Executive member of Student Council, executive member of student clubs (at least a division head), executive member of the Student Welfare Committee, executive member of the Educational Broadcast Station; department representative, and the dormitory council.
  • Support main events such as environment purification, traffic safety campaign, and public service.

Application Procedures

Completed community service should receive issuance of confirmation from the organization (date and time, location, summary of service provided, and official seal from the head of the organization) student application (confirmation from the relative department head for on campus) submit to the academic affairs office (Academic Registrar’s Team).

Required Documents
  • Submit the confirmation of community service to the Academic Registrar’s Team.
  • Not reflected on academic records.

Early Graduation

Definition

If the undergraduate student has satisfied credit requirements, with regard to term of enrollment, the student may apply to graduate early.

Application Period

Within 30 days of the beginning of the last semester of the expected graduating year.

Application Subjects

Must have satisfied credit requirements and have an average GPA of 3.0/4.3 or above.

Application Procedure

Procedure: Student personally applies→ approval by the advising professor and department head, and major advising professor → submit to the Academic Registrars Team → Receive approval for early graduation.
