The KAIST Institute (KI) was established in August 2006 based on generous donations from a Korean-American businessman, Dr. Byiung Jun Park, and his wife, Ms. Chunghi Hong. KI aims to create Korea’s new growth engines through interdisciplinary and integrated research, and to contribute to the happiness and well-being of humankind through science and technology. KI consists of five research institutes: KI for the BioCentury, KI for Information Technology Convergence, KI for Design of Complex Systems, KI for the NanoCentury, and KI for Optical Science and Technology. Under each KI, there are also five affiliated research centers: Cancer Metastasis Control Center (CMCC), Mobile Sensors and IT Convergence Center (MOSAIC), Center of Field Robotics for Innovation, Exploration, aNd Defense (C-FRIEND), Graphene Research Center (GRC), and Center of Optics for Health. Also, the Saudi Aramco-KAIST Co2 Research Center was recently established to address climate change issues and to develop technologies focusing Co2 asare source. Currently, about 270 faculty members and 300 students and researchers are engaged in interdisciplinary research based on innovative ideas that will change the world. KI researchers will continue to strive to attain the following goals.
To achieve these goals, KI will continue to pursue “open innovation, interdisciplinary and integrated research, and work to create through consilience” (OI3RC2).
EEWS is the acronym for Energy, Environment, Water, and Sustainability. Through research in sustainable Green Growth, which aims at pioneering continuous developments in energy, environment, water, transportation and construction, this is a project structure that illustrates KAIST’s determination as it seeks to achieve its fundamental calling as a university by contributing to the development of our nation and humanity.
By conducting EEWS research, KAIST looks to lead the way in solving the primary societal issues of the 21st century, contribute to the nation’s Green Growth by securing related original technology and connecting research results with industry, and by creating a foundation for fostering research manpower that will lead the future of Green Growth.
Provide financial resources and academic credit for undergraduate research so that current KAIST undergraduates can conduct practical experiments and research under the supervision of a professor and teaching assistant.
This project is fundamentally founded on creativity, to support new knowledge and technology creation and the cultivation of creative leaders that are equipped with at least a Master or Ph.D. degree, which will contribute to realizing a creative economy.
Although the capacity of research carried out by domestic universities has increased dramatically, there are limitations in leading creative growth due to the relationship between university education/research outcomes and related new technologies.
